Sugar syrup is one of the sweeteners used in confectionery, a treasured basic recipe for making cakes, cocktails, spirits and beverages in general.

Its base is made with simple water and sugar, which blend with the help of heat, creating a smooth, lump-free consistency.

How to make it sugar syrup

Sugar syrup can be prepared both plain and flavoured. In both cases, it will not be at all complicated to make it at home.

If you need a syrup that is not too sweet and more liquid, use one part of sugar for two pieces of water.

On the contrary, if you want to prepare a sweet and thicker syrup, invert the doses by putting two parts of sugar for one amount of water.

Simple Sugar Syrup

To prepare the simple version, you will need a saucepan, a wooden spoon, a glass jar (in case you want to keep it).

Step 1.

Transfer the water and sugar to a saucepan overheat.

Step 2.

Maintaining medium heat, bring to a boil and stir occasionally.

Step 3.

At this point, lower the heat to low and let the sugar dissolve completely, continuing to stir from time to time.

Step 4.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the sugar syrup cool before using it.

If you want to keep it, transfer it to a glass jar, close the cap tightly and place it in the refrigerator. However, it is always preferable to prepare the sugar syrup when you need to use it.

Flavoured Sugar Syrup

To prepare the flavoured version, you will need a saucepan, a wooden spoon, a tiny mesh strainer, a glass jar (if you want to keep it).

Step 1.

Transfer the water and sugar to a saucepan overheat.

Step 2.

Maintaining medium heat, bring to a boil and stir occasionally.

Step 3.

At this point, lower the heat to low and let the sugar dissolve completely, continuing to stir from time to time.

Step 4.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the ingredient (s) you have chosen to flavour.

Step 5.

Cover with a lid and allow the syrup to flavour for 30 minutes.

Step 6.

After the set time, use the strainer to filter the syrup before using it.

Also, in this case, it is preferable to use the prepared syrups at the moment. However, if you want to keep it, it will be advisable to transfer it to a glass jar, close it with a cap and keep it in the refrigerator.

Tip: you can flavour the sugar syrup with cinnamon or vanilla sticks or with mint, rosemary, basil, orange, lemon and lime zest.
